May 22, 2019 – Sotto Il Cielo Di Roma (OOTD #505)

Not even a week into my time in Rome, and I already twisted my ankle.

I wasn’t even doing anything exciting. I wasn’t running or riding the metro or sitting on the back of a Vespa. I was walking home from work, switching the song playing on my phone, and suddenly my whole body pitched forward. I didn’t quite faceplant, but I rolled my ankle pretty hard, making the walk home pretty painful. It took about an hour and a half, when it normally only took about an hour.

Thankfully, I didn’t have work the following day, and so I could rest up and let my ankle heal a little bit. The injury wasn’t bad — not bad enough to warrant getting it checked out by a doctor —  but it was a major inconvenience. For about a week, all I could do was hobble around slowly, which is not something you want to have to do in a brand new city.

As you can see in some of these pictures, I wrapped a sock around my ankle in an attempt to prevent myself from hurting it further. Because my boots are black too, I hoped that, at first glance, no one could notice that I had wrapped a sock around my foot in an impromptu cast. Socks normally go on your feet, not around them.

Still, I tried not to let my ankle prevent me from going out at least once a day, even if it was only to hobble around slowly and hunt for a place near my house to take pictures for my blog. You might notice that in most of my pictures here I’m sitting — can you guess why?

April 11, 2019 – A Very Blustery Day (OOTD #492)

You’ll have to excuse me if this outfit looks familiar; I seem to have developed an affinity for wearing this scarf and this coat a lot recently.

Mid-April in South Bend can still get pretty chilly, but thankfully; it’s not so cold that I need to wear my full formal winter coat (or my even warmer parka). I have a nice selection of lightweight spring jackets; but this one seems to be my favorite. Maybe it’s because it looks so similar to my camel winter coat?

I’ve actually had this jacket for several years, but only recently have I begun to wear it more frequently. It was a Forever21 purchase that I got for style rather than function back in high school — but recently, I’ve been choosing it because it is so perfectly functional. It’s just the right weight for spring in South Bend — warm, but not too warm.

And this scarf is one of my favorites to pair with it. As you can tell from these pictures, it can get pretty windy — which, paired with the colder temperatures we often get in the mornings, makes a scarf necessary. I like this one because of its heaviness — it’s both warm and functional, and structural and stylish. It’s great for tossing over my shoulders or piling up around my neck.

Plus, it’s yellow and if you’ve been reading this blog lately, you’ll know that mustard yellow is one of my favorite colors to wear. I’m still on the lookout for some yellow gloves to pair with it, and then my transformation info a duckling will be complete.

March 28, 2019 – Welcome to the Sixties (OOTD #484)

Hey, remember when these blogs actually somewhat aligned with the real calendar date? Me neither.

So I’ve sort-of fallen behind. I hope you (and by you, I mean all three regular readers I suppose I have) don’t mind. I do actually really like to have a little bit of space in between the actual day the blog is supposed to be about and the date of that blog’s publication, but  three months is a little ridiculous; even I can admit that.

Regarding March 28’s outfit, though — it’s one of my favorites from March. I mean, I like the majority of my outfits — hence bothering to keep a fashion blog at all — but I’m particularly proud of this one.

Ever since I bought this retro disco dress at a vintage shop in Chicago, I’ve struggled to figure out how to wear it in new and interesting ways. It’s a great dress, don’t get me wrong — I love how blatantly 60s it is, it’s practically something I could have purchased at a Halloween shop with a Brigitte Bardot wig. However, that also poses problems — how do I wear it without looking like I purchased it at a Halloween shop?

It’s not exactly a dress I can throw a denim jacket over. It’s a deceptively simple dress; there’s very little to its design, but because of its bold pattern that immediately dates it to the 1960s, I have to be careful with how I accessorize it. Anything that seems more modern than the 60s, such as a denim jacket, would look silly when paired with it.

I thought this sweater was a good compromise. It’s got something of a vintage vibe to it as well, no?

I love this sweater — I honestly probably wear it way too much. For a cheap Forever21 purchase, it’s certainly lasted me a long time. It also happens to be my new favorite color to wear — yellow. Seems like a double-win for me.

March 25, 2019 – Twirly (OOTD #481)

There’s no shortage of stained glass at Notre Dame — but there is a shortage of stained glass that’s in a place where I can take pictures of it.

For one, a lot of it is in high places, where I can’t reach to stand to take a picture with it. For another, it’s usually inside a church or chapel — and there seems to be something weird to me about taking a picture in a place of worship, even if it’s completely empty and I’m the only one there. I have used an ND chapel for pictures once before on this blog, but to be honest, I still don’t know how I feel about it.

I don’t, however, have any issue taking photos outside of churches or other places of worship — just check out this Buddhist temple in Nepal, this mosque in Qatar, or this church in England that have all been featured on my blog. The ND basilica has shown up here once or twice as well. The architecture of these places of worship is meant to be admired — and as long as I keep my fashion photography on the outside, where no table-flipping Jesus can get mad at me for turning a church into a marketplace, I feel okay with myself.

And so that’s where these photos come from — the outside of a chapel within one of Notre Dame’s buildings. It’s not the most stunning chapel on campus, nor is it the most stunning exterior architecture or stained glass, but you have to admit that it goes nicely with my outfit.

I even figured I’d give the dress a bit of a twirl, which I almost never do because of a) how difficult it can be to get a good shot and b) how ridiculous it looks to passers-by. I’m already stood outside of a chapel in a classroom building taking pictures of my outfit — I don’t need to look any sillier.

March 23, 2019 – Branding (OOTD #479)

I’ve discussed this before, but color can be rather hard to come by at Notre Dame.

Our buildings are pretty much all the same tan-gold brick — which is still very pretty and really gives the campus a sense of cohesion, however, it makes for rather dull backgrounds in fashion photography. Most of the year, the scenery is pretty colorless too — especially in the winter, when campus is covered in snow 65% of the time.

And naturally, the majority of classroom buildings are on the plain side as well. That’s not a huge complaint of mine — I don’t need a rainbow mural adorning every single wall — but when it comes to trying to find interesting and diverse backgrounds for my blog pictures, it can sometimes be a challenge. I’ve used everything from bathroom walls to stairwells to

And now, a new background enters the scene — this large colored poster from the student government office.

The student government office has turned into one of my favorite places to study on campus because I can usually guarantee that it’ll be empty. When there are no meetings in session, the space normally sits vacant — making it a great place to set up shop and get work done. There’s even free coffee from the Keurig.

There’s also this poster, which I’ve been eyeing for quite some time to use as a background for an OOTD post. My only hesitation has been just how student government-centric it is — my blog isn’t an advertising space for other organizations (unless they’re paying me, and even so, that’s usually reserved for Instagram posts), and I don’t really like to feature logos prominently unless it’s something specific to fashion.

But it was cute and colorful, and I thought — why not? I’m not against Notre Dame’s student government, and I am technically a part of it (albeit a very small one). It’s a small price to pay in order to get a colorful background in early spring at Notre Dame on my Instagram feed for once.

March 10, 2019 – Grocery Store Florist (OOTD #469)

A long, long time ago, I applied for a job at this grocery store florist. They didn’t hire me.

It amazes me sometimes how sixteen year-old kids go out and find jobs sometimes, and that’s coming from someone who was once a sixteen year-old kid who found a job.

My first job was actually at the same grocery store chain as this florist, though I worked at a different location. I was a bagger/cart-getter/bathroom-cleaner. It wasn’t a fun job.

I won’t mention the name of the grocery store chain in case one day I want to try to get a job in their corporate department (or alternatively, after I drop out of school and all that’s left for me is to go back and try to get a job as a bagger), so let’s call it something totally made-up — like Shmoger.

I applied for a lot of jobs the summer I was 16 — none of which I got interviews for except this one at Shmoger. That’s the worst part about applying for jobs — the fact that no one seems to want to message you to let you know the status of your application. At least with university applications, you can get rejected from every school you apply to, but they properly reject you. They give you a date they’ll have their decision by, and then they tell you their decision on that date. With jobs, they just ghost you, like a bad Tinder match.

The Shmoger I worked at was going through some renovations when I began working there, and I’m pretty sure that’s the only reason they hired me. I had no real experience (not even babysitting) and no references besides my parents, so they must have been desperate.

The funny thing is, I didn’t really even want the job that badly. I just took it because I figured that’s what you’re supposed to do when you turn 16. Now that I’m at a wealthy university and have wealthy friends, I realize that that’s not the case for people with money and connections, but at the time, pretty much everyone I knew had a crappy job in retail or food or service.

Looking back, I do appreciate the perspective that my crappy barely-above-minimum wage job offered me about the world — how hard it is to get a job if you don’t have a lot of experience or connections or education, how entitled both customers and fellow employees can be, how exhausting it is to do (even slightly) labor-intensive work , how difficult it is to make any actual money working minimum wage and barely getting any hours because you’ve just stared. It helped me to recognize how privileged I am to not have to work jobs like that in order to get by, and how difficult it is to move past that situation if that’s where you’re presently stuck. I ultimately ended up quitting when my junior year began (one of the only things I’ve truly quit for the last several years) because it was too much to do on top of schoolwork. Ironically, I quit the weekend before the big reopening after the renovations were all finished — something for which my boss yelled at me when I sent in my resignation via text.

I can’t imagine trying to work a spiritually and financially thankless job like that while trying to get the education required to get a better job. Getting an education can be spiritually and financially thankless enough on its own sometimes.

I think my second-most important realization at my Shmoger job was how horrible people are who leave their grocery carts out in the middle of the parking lot, especially at night. Please bring them to the corral — or better yet, back up to the front of the store! Some poor kid on cart-duty will thank you.

March 5, 2019 – Sporty (OOTD #465)

What’s up with the recent sports-themed posts on this blog?

I swear, I’m not going through a sports phase, or anything of the sort. This isn’t going to transform into a health blog all of a sudden. I think it’s just been a coincidence.

Ironically, for how sporty this outfit looks, it would actually be horrible to work out in. The shirt I think it like a boys’ medium, so it’s a little tight around my neck and and my chest. And the skirt is…well, a skirt. You can’t really do much in those.

I mean, that’s how athleisure works, though, right? It’s supposedly able to be worn either to the gym or in casual life — but I’m pretty sure that’s not what happens 90% of the time. I have leggings that look sporty, but that I definitely wouldn’t actually work out in.

You’ll also notice that I’m bringing the yellow motif back again! I’m serious about trying to get more yellow into my wardrobe. After my realization that I can actually wear yellow — after years of thinking I couldn’t — I’ve been making an effort to wear it more now. I think this outfit accomplishes that goal, no?

Though the astute observer will notice that something’s off — the three yellows I’m wearing are all different shades! I think they’re far enough apart that they don’t clash, so I let it slide. Ideally, however I probably would not have worn three different versions of yellow.

This is also an example of The Formula 2.0 — the basic skirt-blouse combination that I seem to be favoring a lot recently. I guess this shirt doesn’t really qualify as a blouse, but I think it fits the pattern anyway. I’m getting really predictable now, aren’t I? I have a signature color and a go-to outfit configuration. Next, you’ll be able to predict where I take my photos or what my hair will look like.

February 18, 2019 – Twinning (OOTD #457)

I got so desperate for outfit ideas, I dressed up like my dorm building.

Okay, that’s a bit of a lie — I didn’t dress up like my dorm building on purpose. I didn’t even realize I that I had until I stood in front of it in order to take pictures. The friend who took these pictures said something along the lines of “oh wow, you blend right in” and that’s when I realized — I look like a brick building.

As they say, inspiration can come from anywhere — and I guess sometimes your dorm is it. If we ever have a dorm spirit day or something, you can bet this is what I’m wearing.

Apart from the fact that I literally look like a building here, I do actually really like the outfit. I’ve taken to wearing berets ever since my roommate, Anna, lent me hers for my friend group’s Christmas photoshoot. I know I’m a little late to the trend, but I legitimately feel like a good beret can class up almost any outfit. It makes me feel intellectual and artsy.

No pretentious college student look is complete if you don’t match with your dorm building and top it all off with a black beret, right?

February 7, 2019 – Signature Yellow (OOTD #451)

Yellow has somehow become my signature color.

It’s funny, because for years I wouldn’t wear yellow because I thought I couldn’t wear it with my skin tone. All the magazines I read when I was younger said that Asians shouldn’t wear yellow because it would clash with the already yellow-undertones of our skin.

Guess what? That’s a lie. I look great in yellow, and so do other plenty of other Asian women. I don’t know where the idea the idea that all Asians have warm or “yellow” undertones to their skin came from (well, historically, yes I do), and I don’t know who decided we should avoid yellow entirely, because both of those ideas are faulty. I’m Asian, but I don’t have warm-toned skin — in fact, it’s cool-toned. No one tells other racial groups that they all have the same undertones to their skin, because even among members of the same race, there are many variations in skin tone. It’s the same case for Asians.

I can’t wear every shade of yellow — for example, pastel yellow or pale gold tend to wash me out — but I can do a deep, saturated yellow like this shirt here. And it seems that of late, I’ve been wearing the color more and more.

One of my friends, Mariana, has adopted the principle of a “signature color.” In order to create cohesion in her everyday look, she’s chosen a particular color — in her case, red — to buy her accessories in. She has a red laptop case, a red scarf, and a red mug, just to name a few things. It’s a great, easy way to tie things together without getting in the way of whatever she’s wearing and whatever color scheme that ensemble has. She always looks really put together, and I think it’s in part because she has a common motif throughout her accessories.

And so I think I’m going to try it with yellow. I already have a yellow winter scarf and yellow snow/rain boots. I’m not sure how that’s going to work with my camel coat, but I’ll find a way to make it work. I think I feel like yellow is the most unappreciated of the primary colors, and it’s about time it gets some love.

February 3, 2019 – Rule of Law (OOTD #448)

For a prospective law student, I hardly ever stumble into Notre Dame’s law school.

One explanation might be that in truth, I’d really rather not go to law school here. I’ve loved my time at Notre Dame, and I’m very grateful for the four years that I’ll have here — but I don’t want those four years to last any longer than they have to. I don’t want to be what ND students call a “Double Domer,” or someone who does both their undergraduate and graduate studies at Notre Dame.

I’ve got nothing against ND’s law school — I’m pretty sure they’ve got a good program, and if they accepted me, I’d be a fool not to at least consider it. In fact, I probably will still apply (mostly out of convenience and the hopes that having done my undergraduate studies here, I’ll get extra points in the admissions review), but like I said, I hope I don’t actually have to stay here for law school. Four years of Northern Indiana weather and the general lack of anything to do in South Bend but service work is enough for me.

Since I’m hoping to not end up attending Notre Dame’s law school as a student, I decided to venture inside for the very first time. I was actually drawn in by the library — there were a few books I wanted to look into for a paper, and it turned out they could only be found at the Kresage Law Library.

I’d always been a little afraid of the law school. I’m just an undergraduate, of course, and I thought I’d stick out as gawky and awkward to the older students. And maybe I did — I don’t know. But if there’s anything this fashion blog has taught me, it’s how to ignore bouts of minor social anxiety and the feeling of being watched in order to get a task done. Whether I looked like a stupid, confused undergraduate wandering around the halls of the law school alone or not, I managed to find the books I was looking for — and get some OOTD pics for this blog.

Two birds in one stone. I win.
