September 7, 2017 – This Outfit Is A Shameless Ripoff (OOTD #106)

Originality is hard, and sometimes, it just doesn’t work out.

Not everything you do can always be a brilliant, unique, creative concept – sometimes, you have to go with the trends. There’s nothing wrong at all with being trendy; if you want to set trends, in fact, I think you have to follow them first.

This outfit though, was less about following trends, and more about following someone else. I don’t even know who it was – some girl I saw walking across campus. She had on a really cute outfit consisting of a navy blouse and a camel-colored suede skirt, and lo and behold…what do I decide to wear the next day?

In my defense, the tights were 100% my own idea. And I 100% did it because I thought they added to the fashion of the outfit, not just because I hadn’t shaved recently.

It’s a surprise to me that I hadn’t already thought to pair these two pieces, considering how much I love the camel-black (or navy) color combination, and how much I love this suede skirt and this breezy blouse. Actually this was only the second time I wore this shirt at all (the first time, being on the plane ride over to London, actually), which is odd, because like I said, I really like it.

It’s funny how that works, isn’t it? My favorite pieces are not necessarily my most oft worn pieces. It’s like I want to save them, keep them secret until I have a really stellar outfit to show them off in. It’s almost like I’m afraid my love for them would wear off if I wore them too often; like listening to a song you like too many times until it eventually gets annoying.

Anyway.

So, random girl walking across campus whom I just happened to spot, kudos to you for thinking of this outfit before me. Because, you know, I’m positive she was the first person in the history of time to ever pair a navy blouse and a tan skirt.

*insert philosophical discussion about how nothing is original anymore – including philosophical discussion about how nothing is original*

July 4, 2017 – We’re Flying First Class / Up in the Sky (OOTD #58)

…Poppin’ champagne / Livin’ my life…

(Random bit of trivia – the first time I ever heard “Glamorous” by Fergie it was on a Kidz Bop CD – it wasn’t until years later that I realized there was a real version not sung by whiny children)

Had a pleasant surprise at the airport yesterday – we got bumped up to first class on our flight from Detroit to London!

It was July 4, Independence Day for the US so the airports were deadly quiet, a far cry from their typical, crowded messiness. It was beautiful. Both Amanda and I remarked that being in the near-empty Detroit Airport made for one of the nicest airport experiences either of us had ever had. Getting bumped to first class (likely due to how no one wants to fly on the 4th of July) also helped.

I’ve never flown first class before, and to be honest, I don’t know how I’ll ever go back to flying coach. It was so lovely – large comfortable seats that reclined, nice food, pillows and blankets – so vastly different from the tiny uncomfortable seats I’m used to. I know it’s not likely that we’ll get first class again for the way back, but I certainly hope we do. Perhaps we can find some fountain that we can throw a coin into and make a wish, à la the Lizzie McGuire movie.

Which brings me to our location for today’s photos – this magic fountain that got us first class seats. Clearly, we got what we asked for this time, so on our way back, I’m definitely going to take another penny (or hey, maybe even a nickel) and wish for a million dollars and maybe some cheesecake.

Sorry it’s not a very long or exciting blog post today, but it wasn’t a very exciting day. 9 of my 24 hours today were spent sitting on a plane doodling or watching the Lego Batman Movie (which was absolutely excellent by the way – best Batman film since The Dark Knight). For my outfit, I did try to be a little patriotic with the blue shirt and the red scarf, but in all honesty, I was mostly just aiming to be comfortable while sitting for hours.

Though at the time of writing this blog post, I’m technically now in London, by the end of July 4, I was still in a plane somewhere over the Atlantic, so I’m going to end this blog post here. More adventures to come. Stay tuned!

You know, “make it work.”

I got this absolutely lovely dress less than a month ago from Anthropologie (one of my favorite stores, by the way) on clearance for 60% off. I didn’t want to pass it up, but sadly, it was a size too big.

What to do?

In many cases, there’s nothing to be done. Sometimes a dress that’s too big is just too big. There’s always the tailor, of course, but, as I’m the type of person who can only afford Anthropologie when I shop in their clearance section, I’m definitely not the type of person who can afford a tailor for everything.

Regardless of the fact I knew it wasn’t likely to work, I decided to try it on and give it a chance anyway. Maybe it wasn’t quite as big as it looked on the hanger? I’m a hopeful person, especially when it comes to clothes.

So I tried it on, and things were exactly as I expected – it was simply too big to be worn as-is. The shoulders actually fit okay, and the sleeves looked appropriately flowy, but the rest of it was baggy and awkward. I was thinking I ought just to give up, regardless of how much I loved the complementary blue-orange color scheme and mixed textures, when I thought of an idea. What about a belt?

The end of this story is obvious enough – I bought the dress because I couldn’t resist the price, and when I brought it home, I simply threw a simple black waist belt around it to balance out the bagginess. The perfect solution? Maybe, maybe not. In general, I prefer to respect the will of designers and wear clothes the way they’re meant to be worn (except in the case of oversized vintage work shirts that can be worn as dresses…), but sometimes, you’ve got to do as Tim Gunn says, and make it work.

I’m back!

I don’t know if I’d really call what I took as a hiatus, as it only lasted one day, but after New York, I felt like I needed one day off from blogging. I still took my pictures for the day and everything, but I held off on making the post.

So here we are, with the outfit for Monday, May 1.

So yesterday being College Decision Day, I wore the shirt from the college I will be attending this Fall – Notre Dame! I actually was accepted back in December, but it took me until April to actually choose that that was where I wanted to go. I’m admittedly a pretty indecisive person, so it was a huge relief to finally get the decision made, and it felt great to get to show off to my high school what I am going to be doing with my life.

But just because it was a college shirt doesn’t mean I couldn’t still make it a fashionable outfit. I wore my Notre Dame football jersey with leggings and a loose black cotton jacket, and to dress it up, I threw on my layered Francesca’s choker with rhinestones that I like so much. It’s not the most unique outfit I’ve ever worn, admittedly, but it’s kinda hard to work with a football jersey.

Otherwise, it was a pretty lowkey day. I was exhausted from having arrived back at home from New York at 1 AM that morning, but thankfully, none of my class work was too hard. AP exams are coming up, so most of my teachers have cut back slightly on the homework. Thank goodness.

Guess who didn’t go to school today?

That’s right – *points thumbs at self dorkily* this girl!

No, I was not skipping. As much fun as another senior skip day would be, I had some more pressing issues to take care of – prom decorations. Prom committee, despite being a club I initially joined just so I could put it on my resume, is actually pretty fun. My friend and I got to spend the day working on making these giant chalkboard welcome signs, which was by far better than any day spent sitting in a classroom taking notes.

Knowing I was going to be on my hands and knees a lot working, I needed to wear something practical. I kept it basic with black leggings, a long sleeve cropped sweater, and an asymmetrical black jacket. Because I was drawing (and because it was super warm!), I rolled the sleeves of the jacket up. Actually, that jacket was an afterthought – I had the leggings and the sweater put together, but it didn’t feel quite complete, so I threw it on top on a whim. As for accessories, I wore this super cute layered choker from Francesca’s for a great deal (it was like, $10 reduced from $30) and an old black rubber band that I wear as a ring (it’s a long story…maybe another time).

Also, I had my hair redone today. It’s nice to not have awkward black roots, lol.

Oh, and fingers crossed that prom goes well!

They’ll probably fall apart after a few washes, but they’re comfy and it beats going to Victoria’s Secret for leggings that will stretch out anyway)
